The first thing that comes to the mind of a person who doesn’t know much about programming is a guy sitting in front of a PC is typing something that has a combination of letters, alphabets and punctuation (#,/,*, }).

What is programming?

Programming is a process of developing and implementing various sets of instructions to enable a computer to do a certain task. These instructions are considered computer programs and help the computer to operate smoothly.

Programming involves activities such as analysis, developing understanding, generating algorithms, verification of requirements of algorithms including their correctness and resources consumption, and implementation of algorithms in a target programming language.  A source code is written in one or more programming languages. The purpose of programming is to find a sequence of instructions that will automate performing a specific task or solve a given problem.

Are you still confused? I’ll make it more simple. A computer program is a set of instructions. A programmer writes a program to tell the computer what to do. A programmer takes a problem, breaks it down into a series of steps, and describes those steps to the computer so that it can give a solution to the problem.

Why do computer’s need programming?

Computers were made to help people solve complex problems like complex calculations in various fields. They are expensive collections of metals, plastic, and silicon. They are dumb as bricks. The computer is powerful, but it is not smart and can not do anything on its own. They need humans to write instructions for it to do to certain tasks like draw a circle, square etc. This is called programming.

The computer is just like an obedient dog. It will listen to your every command and do whatever you tell it to do. But you need to teach it first.

Example: Making Tea

For instance, I created a robot. So now I want the robot to make tea for me. Will it make tea for me? Obviously not. I need to teach the robot how to make tea in the language it understands.

For that, I need to tell him what is a stove, milk, tea leaves, water, sugar.

  • Then tell him the first step is to boil water.
  • The second step is to add sugar wait for a for a minute.
  • The third step is to add tea leaves.
  • The fourth step is to wait for a few minutes.
  • The fifth step is to add milk and wait for one more minute.
  • The final step is to strain the tea.
  • You can also give instructions like pour the tea in a cup etc.
  • If you want you could tell him to repeat step 2 two times.
  • You can put a few conditions like make tea in the morning at 9 A.M and in the evening at 6 P.M.

But if you just miss one letter, number or a punctuation the robot may not do any work. So writing a program is challenging. So the instruction’s have to be correct at beginning, middle and end.  If there is any mistake even at the end or middle they robot will not do the task.

Uses of Programming

You can use programs for a lot of things.

Cars is a computer-animated comedy adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. Programs help Walt Disney and  Pixar animation studios to make 3d animated movies. They are helpful in creating special effects in various movies like action, horror etc.

Programs can be games like angry birds or temple run.
